DECLARATION: No Nuclear Weapons in Australia
We are proud to stand alongside 150 organisations across Australia and the Pacific in launching the 'No Nuclear Weapons in Australia Declaration'.
Together we are calling on the Albanese government to prohibit the entry, transit or presence of nuclear weapons in Australian territory, waters and airspace, uphold Australia's commitments to a nuclear-free world, and sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
The declaration comes as Australia prepares to host US nuclear-capable B-52 bombers and potentially nuclear-armed submarines under AUKUS. US policy neither confirms nor denies the presence of nuclear weapons on visiting vessels, and Australia has no legal ban on them being here.
That means we could be hosting American nuclear weapons without knowing it, making Australia complicit in any nuclear attack launched from our ports and bases, a higher priority target, and at greater risk of a catastrophic nuclear accident at home.
As a founding signatory to the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty, Australia has a clear obligation. It's time to honour it.
We're calling on the Albanese government to:
- Sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons as a matter of urgency
- Reject nuclear ambiguity and prohibit the entry, transit or presence of nuclear weapons in Australian territory, waters and airspace
- End all forms of assistance to nuclear weapons activities
- The declaration is still open for civil society organisations across Australia and the Pacific to sign on.
