A big year for nuclear justice:
our plans for 2026

2026 is already well underway, and as you will see from our social media lately, we are off to a flying start in this big year! We have big  plans for the Nuclear Truth Project as we continue to work towards our goals of education, advocacy and building networks for nuclear justice.

Our key programs are around the Protocols, our work to challenge nuclear secrecy and community connections. We also have a series of important anniversaries, and the first ever Review Conference for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons coming up later in the year! It promises to be a big year of activity and collaborative effort for our work in nuclear justice for affected communities.

With our Protocols: We are seeking endorsements of the Protocols from affected community members, civil society organizations, professional bodies, journalists, filmmakers and research institutions for the Protocols. You can sign on to the Pledge here.

We are planning to expand our training workshops with communities and organizations in 2026. If you are interested in inviting us in to introduce or discuss the Protocols further, reach out to us on info@nucleartruthproject.org. We will make announcements soon on openings for Protocols workshops for our members too!

In challenging nuclear secrecy, this year we will: Seek more opportunities to connect and collaborate with affected communities who are seeking information on their nuclear histories, share stories of communities and researchers collaborating on archival justice (like those we heard inthis incredible webinar last November), and continue to seek out resources for nuclear archives that may help affected communities.

In building community connections: We will be holding more open meetings throughout the year for members to come together and share what is happening “from the Frontlines”. These will be online meetings where you are invited to share news of nuclear developments from your country, region or community. The first of these will be held in late March. More details to come!

And of course, key to our community connections, this year we also have our new program, the Reclaim Community Fellowships!

Across the year, there are two other important areas of focus for us - the first Review Conference (RevCon) for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and a series of important anniversaries.

The First RevCon of the TPNW is scheduled to take place in the United Nations from 30 November to 4 December 2026. We will be sharing much over the year as we work towards this important international conference.

There are also some significant anniversaries of nuclear related events including:

      • The 5th anniversary of the Entry into Force for the TPNW was in January (link to our socials)
      • The 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster in April
      • The 80th anniversary of the US nuclear bombings beginning in the Marshall Islands in July
      • The 60th anniversary of French nuclear bombing starting in Ma’ohi Nui/Tahiti/French occupied Polynesia in July (and the 30th anniversary since the testing program was stopped!)
      • The 35th anniversary since the Semipalatinsk nuclear weapons testing site was closed down in Qazaqstan
      • And the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) opening for signature in September.
