Solidarity with the Peace Walkers who began a momentous journey this week!

They are undertaking a 400 km walk to raise awareness of the military and nuclear implications of the AUKUS deal in Australia.

First Nations and activists from a range of backgrounds are joining this walk, meeting community along the way, raising awareness and building connections.

AUKUS is a trilateral military pact between the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. It is the cause of great community concern across so called Australia. The extraordinary financial costs are only the beginning.

AUKUS is seen as putting both regional and national security at risk. The entanglement of the initial AUKUS plans for Australia to get (secondhand) nuclear powered submarines will lead to a nuclear waste problem that will last generations to come, and will impact Aboriginal lands and waters.

More broadly, AUKUS ties Australia into nuclear war planning with two of the nine nuclear weapons states when the world should be disarming and abolishing nukes. It is a bad idea born of poor politics.

The Peace Walkers are starting off from Port Augusta, South Australia, walking over many weeks through desert countryside, to end up in Port Adelaide, a place central to AUKUS plans. The Walkers will also highlight the impacts of uranium mining, nuclear weapons test legacies, and threats for nuclear waste dumping.

Aged from their 20s to their 70s, the Peace Walkers will pass through sacred lands. Already in just their first days they have stood beneath trees that are 800 years old, slept under stars and beside spring fed waterholes. But their message is clear - Stop AUKUS.
