“The Nevada-Semipalatinsk international anti-nuclear movement became the fastest-growing initiative in the world. It united people across nations and continents. The impact of this movement is, was and still is of huge historic significance,” she added.
It directly prevented 11 of the 18 planned tests in 1989, the final of which occurred in October of that year. The Semipalatinsk test site closed on Aug.29, 1991.
“I was born in 1977. I am one of three sisters, and I consider myself fortunate that I have not experienced any major health issues—though I have never undergone specific medical testing for radiation exposure. As a mother of two boys, I often wonder how this legacy might affect my children,” she said, noting the need for continued research, awareness and international commitment to nuclear disarmament to prevent future generations from bearing similar uncertainties.
Based: London since 2006, and born in the village of Sosnovka, located near the perimeter of the former Soviet Union's main nuclear “testing” grounds - Semipalatinskii nuclear “testing” site (SNTS) in Qazaqstan.
Current: Since 2023 Indira has collaborated with Mr. K Kuyukov, a well-known Qazaq Mouth Artist and a longstanding advocate for nuclear justice, who was born without arms as a direct result of nuclear “testing” at the SNTS. Indira carries his paintings to the peak of mountains including the summit of Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America, to raise awareness of the legacy of nuclear testing. She climbed the highest peak in North America, Denali, in June 2024 with one of his paintings to raise funds for a special centre for babies with complex needs, called “Dom Rebenka” in Semey, Qazakhstan.

TPNW engagement - 3MSP
5th March 2025: As a member of the QNFC, Indira had the honour of sharing her collaboration with K Kuyukov at the side event “Nevada-Semey 2.0 Transnational Solidarity and Intergenerational Advocacy towards Nuclear Justice” during the 3MSP to TPNW at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This event was co-organised by QNFC, FES Qazaqstan, STOP, and the Western States Legal Foundation (USA), and supported by ICAN.
6th March 2025: Indira moderated a discussion at the Nuclear Survivors Forum during the 3MSP to TPNW, where she was introduced to the Nuclear Truth Protocols for the first time.
Recent activism & awareness raising June 2025: Indira assisted Ms. Aigerim Seitenova, a co-founder of QNFC, in organising a screening of the documentary “Jara” in London, the Scottish Parliament, and at the Words and Actions for Peace Centre in Edinburgh, also participating in panel discussions.
September 2025: Indira recounted her Denali climbing experience to an international audience during a webinar organised by the British-Kazakh Society in London.
Since November 2024 I participated in further 3 online meetings by the TPNW-UK supporters, organised by Dr R Johnson (January/April/June).
August 2026: Indira is planning a family visit to Semey with an intention to take an active part in providing any help to run the events that hopefully will take place to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the closure of the SNTS.
