REPORT LAUNCH: Challenging Nuclear Secrecy

The Nuclear Truth Project and ICAN Australia webinar launching the Challenging Nuclear Secrecy report and a deep discussion on how affected communities, researchers, civil society and governments interact with nuclear archives; case studies and community stories; and some tools for researchers coming to this work.

Our authors have worked hard to bring together a compelling discussion of nuclear truth in the age of nuclear secrecy.=

As outlined in our Executive Summary, there are two key arguments in this report. The first is that the processes driving archival systems do not align with the priorities of affected communities. This necessitates both a reliance on community memory and the development of novel strategies towards access.

The second is that affected community testimony has become indispensable in advocacy and research, but largely in the absence of ethical considerations about its acquisition, distribution and attribution. This has compounded harms for some affected community members.

The report concludes with policy suggestions and calls to action for governments and researchers which communities may themselves want to support.
